Is there any reason why a customer cannot work on their own furnace/buy their own parts?Unless you are qualified technician, working on any of the electric/gas components presents risk. You are required to have a gas ticket to purchase certified parts from almost all wholesalers.
-
What temperature should I run my furnace at in the winter ?Comfort is key so it varies but typically anywhere from 20 to 23°C seems to be a menial average.
-
How often should I have my ducts cleaned?Your filter is a good indicator of how often to get your ducts cleaned. Animal hair can build up in the ducts, causing unnecessary dust and filter wear . We do recommend every 3 to 4 years. However, if there’s a renovation going on, it should be done immediately upon completion.
-
How do I know if my furnace is too old?We are of the opinion that if something works, and has worked for a long chapter, fix it. When the cost of repair starts to get close to the price of a new furnace, it’s time. Another good indicator is if parts are not readily available. Some of the best furnaces made were during a 15 year span between 1995 and 2009 known as mid efficiency furnaces.
-
Is my furnace worth repairing? The answer is… Probably. Depending on what kind of furnace you’re dealing with it’s generally a good idea to at least figure out what’s wrong with it before condemning it. There’s a very high chance that it can be repaired for a reasonable cost. The two main reasons for not repairing a furnace, would be cracked, heat, exchangers, or inaccessible parts .
-
Will I actually save money on my gas bill if I change the furnace? The answer is, it’s complicated. Yes, you will notice a small gas bill decrease, and your electricity bill may also slightly improve . But the reality is all those savings are offset if your new furnace breaks. Warranty on new furnaces range from 5 to 10 years typically depending on whether or not it is registered. But be careful! Some of those warranties are linked to regular yearly maintenance packages.

And my favourite question, my old furnace had no issues for 25 years, why does my new one keep breaking?Like with everything else in the world, each new wave of furnaces, brings new technology. Fourty year old furnaces had four or five major parts. They produced lots of heat, and had minimal technology/circuitry thus , less chance of failure. As soon as the term efficiency started floating around, new safety systems needed to be introduced, requiring circuit boards, additional motors , and protective devices. More complicated usually means more can break.
